An Obstetrical Emergency
A uterine rupture is a major complication of pregnancy, labor and delivery that can be deadly for both the mother and child. When a uterine rupture occurs, time is of the essence. Doctors have very little time to surgically deliver the child.
The attorneys of The Becker Law Firm, L.P.A., in Cleveland, Ohio, have won financial compensation for clients in cases involving uterine rupture. We have the medical and legal experience required to determine whether the obstetrical caregivers in your case were negligent.
What Is Uterine Rupture?
In a uterine rupture, the uterus tears. Blood spills into the woman's abdomen. The fetus and/or the placenta protrude from the uterus or are fully expelled from it. It requires an immediate Cesarean section to deliver the child and to surgically repair or remove the uterus.
Who Is at Risk?
Uterine rupture can happen in any pregnancy, but it is more common in women that have a surgical scar on their uterus from a prior Cesarean section or other uterine surgery. The drugs Pitocin and Cytotec have been associated with an increased risk of uterine rupture. Women who have a suspected large fetus or are carrying multiple fetuses are also at higher risk.
Doctors and other obstetrical caregivers who encourage a woman to push before her cervix is fully dilated also put the woman at risk of uterine rupture.
